Bayview
Facts
In 1905 a small mail and excursion steamboat company began doing
business in Bayview. Their advertising promoted an all day cruise
from Bayview to Sandpoint. In 1908 the Northern Navigation Company
began operating a mail and passenger steamboat - the "Northern".
This double-decked 102 foot steamer ended her career in flames
in 1928.
The other major business established in Bayview at the turn of
the century involved lime kilns. Utilizing local limestone, lime
was "baked" in conical kilns and then formed into cement
products by the Washington Brick and Lime Co. of Spokane. The
lime quarries closed in the 1930's due to the decline of lime
quality and the Great Depression. The set of lime kilns in Bayview
are a registered historical site and can still be seen at Scenic
Bay Marina Park.
Fishing,
boating & sailing are major pasttimes on Lake Pend O'reille.
Presently, Lake Pend Oreille is known world wide for record size
kamloop trout and mackinaw. The best place to still catch them
is in the deep water at the southern, or 'Bayview', end of the
lake. The lake also has bass and perch in the north shallower
waters of the lake. Cutthroat trout are scattered through the
entire lake system, but especially concentrated around the many
creeks flowing into the lake. The almost 100,000 acre lake is
also magnificent for cruising or sailing past beautiful mountain
scenery and viewing wildlife such as osprey, eagles, deer and
even mountain goats suspended on the cliffs at the 'Bayview' end
of the lake.
Scenic Bay Marina & Motel can be found on the southern end
of Lake Pend O'reille in the town of Bayview. There are over 200
open and covered moorage slips, a thriving community of floating
homes within the marina, and a motel on the water. At Scenic Bay
Marina & Motel we take pride in our well maintained facilities.
